Ministries of Eastlake
ELECT (East Lake Every Children Taught)
Director of ELECT: Kara Cadwell
ELECT exists to meet a significant unmet need in the East Lake community by providing after-school academic tutoring to students in our neighborhood in grades K-5.
The two goals of this ministry are to see kids academically succeed, and to plant gospel truths in their heart. Monday through Thursday from 3-5, we pick up kids from Clifton Hills and East Lake Elementary and start off each day with announcements and devotions, then transition into homework, outside time and a healthy snack. In the summer we turn into a day camp that meets from 8:00 to 3:00 Monday through Friday.
ELECT has enjoyed a deep and meaningful partnership with the YMCA of Greater Chattanooga. The YMCA provides subsidized staffing, daily, healthy, meals for our students, and our LEXIA and REFLEX online learning programs and computer lab.
Every day, the most significant work we do is encouraging our students who live in a harsh world with loving, kind relationships and the life-giving truth of the gospel.
Director of Latino Ministries: Eunice Mendoza
At East Lake, our congregation represents a variety of ethnicities, many of which are Latino. Many of the new immigrants arrive in our neighborhood with a huge deficit: the need to learn English. God has brought the World to our doorstep. What marvelous news for His Church! Through the ethnic diversity of America, God has made it even easier for us to obey the Great Commission of “making disciples of all nations” (Mat 28). ESL meets every Sunday night, Volunteers arrive 15 minutes early to pray as a group and at 4:00PM are dismissed to their classrooms. We study English for 1.5 hours, and at 5PM we all gather in the fellowship hall for a meal and a devotion. Our students are invited to come any day during the week to the computer lab to work on their spelling and sounds.
Executive Director East Lake Expression Engine: Libby O’Neil
Phone: (309) 912-8820
The East Lake Expression Engine functions in tandem with our tutoring and mentoring program (ELECT), and the YMCA of Chattanooga. During the summer, students participate in daily morning music classes such as choir, bucket band, musicianship, and orchestra. During the school year, students receive private instruction and continue to function in bucket band, choir, and orchestra.
ELEE is inspired by the musical ideals of the El Sistema movement, that music is an effective avenue for developing children’s creativity and problem solving skills, and building up a strong community. We focus on doing the work of teaching music through gospel-centered relationships with children in the greater East Lake neighborhood.
